Understanding Melasma
What Is Melasma?
Melasma is a chronic pigmentation condition caused by excess melanin production in certain areas of the skin. It usually appears as symmetrical brown or grey-brown patches on the cheeks, forehead, nose, upper lip and jawline.
It is more common in women and often becomes noticeable in the thirties and forties, but men can develop it too. Kochi’s strong sun, heat and humidity make melasma both common and stubborn here.
Melasma can sit in the upper layers of the skin, deeper layers, or both — which is why it responds differently from person to person, and why treatment should start with a dermatologist’s pigmentation assessment.
Causes & Triggers
What Triggers Melasma?
Melasma usually has more than one trigger. Identifying yours is a key part of keeping it under control.

Sun & UV exposure
The biggest trigger. Even short daily exposure can darken patches or bring them back.

Hormonal changes
Pregnancy, hormonal medicines and other hormonal shifts can start or worsen melasma.

Heat & visible light
Heat, humidity and strong light — common in Kerala — can keep pigmentation active.

Genetics
A family history of melasma makes some people more prone to it.

Irritation & harsh products
Inflammation from strong scrubs or unsuitable products can make patches darker.

Unsupervised creams
Over-the-counter bleaching or steroid creams can cause rebound darkening and skin damage.
Getting the Diagnosis Right
Melasma or Another Type of Pigmentation?
Different pigmentation types need different treatment, so a correct diagnosis comes first.
Melasma
Symmetrical brown or grey-brown patches on both cheeks, forehead or upper lip, often linked to sun and hormones.
Post-inflammatory pigmentation
Dark marks left after acne, injury or irritation, appearing where the skin was inflamed.
Sunspots & freckles
Small, well-defined spots from sun exposure, often on the face, hands and shoulders.

Questions & Answers
Melasma Treatment FAQs
Can melasma be cured permanently?
Melasma is a chronic condition, so it is controlled rather than permanently cured. With the right treatment and maintenance, most people see significant, lasting improvement.
How long does melasma treatment take?
Improvement is gradual and usually seen over several weeks to months. The timeline depends on how deep your melasma is and how consistently the plan and sun protection are followed.
Is laser treatment safe for melasma?
Gentle, low-energy laser toning can help when it is planned by a dermatologist with settings suited to your skin. Aggressive lasers can worsen melasma, which is why laser is always used selectively.
Does sunscreen really make a difference?
Yes — it is one of the most important parts of treatment. Without daily broad-spectrum sunscreen and reapplication, melasma can return or worsen even after successful treatment.
Why does my melasma keep coming back?
Sun, heat, hormones and skin irritation can re-trigger pigment production. A maintenance plan helps reduce relapse — read why melasma keeps coming back.
Can men get melasma?
Yes. Melasma is more common in women, but men can develop it too, and it is treated in the same careful, step-by-step way.
Is melasma related to pregnancy or hormones?
Hormonal changes, including pregnancy and hormonal medicines, are common triggers. Some treatments are not suitable during pregnancy, so always tell your dermatologist if you are pregnant or planning to be.
How is melasma treatment planned?
Your dermatologist assesses your concerns, medical history and the area to be treated before recommending melasma treatment. The plan and any follow-up depend on your assessment and response. Book a consultation to discuss suitable options.
